Experiment:
- Use this picture on your phone
- Open this page on your browser
In this week’s experiment, I used AFrame and AR.js from github.com/jeromeetienne/AR.js. The script that you run on your browser linked above uses the webcam to display some text when it picks up the QR-code-like image linked above. To view this experiment, hold the picture from your phone in front of the webcam. The text that pops up reads, “hi im text.” This text is personified from this text and is also in an instant messaging style. I would like to expand this project as a final project with various QR codes where the viewer can use their phone to run the script and look at the QR codes.
When watching media (e.g. television, film credits), our reading, listening, and thinking fuse. Because our eyes, ears, and brain are able to work in tandem, we are able to consume digital language art pieces and media. Thinking about it in this way, this is how each part of a piece is enhanced when another layer that utilizes an additional sense is added. J.R. Carpenter’s distinction between handmade web pages and non-handmade web pages is interesting. She classifies pages maintained by corporations and businesses as non-handmade web pages even though there is a human behind the pages that corporations and business create. I don’t necessarily disagree with her classification, but am just noting an observation.
